Along with supporting individual women as mentors and sponsors, women presidents have opportunities to lead structural, strategic, and policy changes to foster women's career advancement at their institutions. A review of the scholarly literature and interviews with women presidents suggest concrete steps that will foster access and equity for women in higher education leadership.
Professor Larry Roper, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor, School of Language, Culture, and Society at Oregon State University
As each of us pursues our personal journey towards greater awareness, a more inclusive life and more equitable relationships, we should occasionally pause, reflect and examine what we are carrying with us on our journey. This session will provide an opportunity to examine personal qualities that influence our ability to effectively engage with others, particularly those who differ from us. Specifically, we will explore emotions, thoughts and behaviors that enhance or impede our ability to experience closeness with others.
President Krista Newkirk, J.D., Converse College
Converse College’s ongoing, mission-driven planning processes took an unusual turn in 2018-2019, with a clear-eyed look at enrollment projections and a community-wide reexamination of the institution's mission. Founded as an institution of opportunity for women’s education, Converse engaged in a detailed study that resulted in decisions to expand the enrollment market in several ways while re-envisioning the mission of being an institution of opportunity. In this session, Converse President Krista Newkirk will summarize the planning process, focusing on how mission and market came together with lessons in change management that are applicable to other institutions.
President Barbara K. Mistick, D.M., National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities
Join NAICU President Barbara Mistick to explore higher education advocacy from the vantage point of the President’s office as the new administration shifts the direction of policy for the future.
