Student Success & Retention Student Affairs Assessment

The Student Affairs Assessment, or ACE®, is a solution built on Assessing, Counseling, and Empowering, leveraging the strengths of campus life in order to identify “next-generation” opportunities that promote a thriving student culture.

Through a process that engages key campus partners in a collaborative and holistic approach, the ACE assesses the current student experience through the lens of students, the Student Affairs division, and the larger campus community. This discovery and support process is guided by research, high impact practices, system, and structural approaches that are correlated with creating a campus environment where students live out the connections between their experiences in and outside the classroom.

Student Affairs Assessment outcomes include:

  • A prioritized list of strategies, action steps, and program opportunities to guide campus life planning and resource allocation.
  • Affirmed and/or recommended reporting structure, roles, and responsibility alignment for Student Affairs to meet immediate and long-term division and campus goals.
  • A recommended protocol for the collection, synthesis, and analyses of data to better understand:
    1. high priority student program and service needs
    2. programs and services that facilitate students’ successful transition into and throughout college
    3. students’ growth as campus leaders and emerging professionals
    4. students’ personal development and ability to integrate their learning experiences, and
    5. the impact of policies and practices on the student experience.
  • The identification of technological system efficiencies to maximize campus life.
  • A comparative assessment of specific high-impact practices proven to positively impact retention, such as: the First Year Experience and students in transition, the residential experience, career engagement, study abroad/study away, opportunities for cross-cultural engagement and inclusion, partnerships in undergraduate research, and similar opportunities.
  • Enhanced campus-wide understanding of the factors that impact student engagement, thus leading to opportunities to improve conditions that enhance student learning outside the classroom.
  • The identification of campus practices that currently reflect the characteristics of a thriving Student Affairs division.

The ACE will incorporate your college or university's Student Affairs strategies and approaches in the context of campus priorities, new/emerging initiatives, and institutional/national data that illustrates students’ involvement in, and satisfaction with co-curricular practices.

Taken together, these critical pieces of information will position your Student Affairs division to further explore and activate its most impactful opportunities for continued student success and realize institutional quantitative and qualitative retention and net revenue goals.
