Space Planning Meets Student Success

A focused campus plan centered around student outcomes

Optimizing Your Space for Student Success

Do you have a compelling story about your campus you share with prospective students? Does your campus itself reinforce that narrative with welcoming spaces that lift up your unique value proposition?

Our Credo designers, campus planners, and student success experts partner with colleges and universities to understand how your community is using your spaces, and provide a focused space utilization plan that reinforces value proposition through the optimization of your campus spaces and places—all centered around student success and learning outcomes.

Focused Campus Planning for best use of Space

Through assessments and scenario workshops we evaluate your campus, strategy, and student needs, and thoughtfully optimize the future of your campus. Examining data, artifacts, enrollment, classrooms and third-spaces, we create efficiencies to ensure you are getting the best use of your space.

The result is a campus environment optimized to efficiently serve learners whether they are in the classroom, the lab, the residence hall, or building community in shared third-spaces.

Phases of Campus Optimization

Phase 1

Thinking About Space

The Credo planning team will begin by conducting assessments. This phase culminates in a fact-finding presentation that offers our observations and recommendations based on our experience and understanding of typical space requirements and efficiencies.

Phase 2

Space Planning

The transition to Phase 2 begins with comprehensive space programming. We work with your leadership team to determine and calculate required future space needs, locations, and adjacencies. Using floor plans and site plans, during this phase we identify options that meet planning intentions and improve efficiencies.

Phase 3

Implementation Plan

An implementation or action plan includes a description of the final destination, the pathway there, and milestones along the way. This phase addresses the approximate cost range of the plan's components and the order in which they can or must be completed. Prioritization and sequencing are tied to priorities and immediate needs, and to resources and ROI.

Frequently Asked Questions About Space Optimization

  • What are some guiding questions for optimizing space?

We think about questions related to expense and revenue including:

Expense: Is our campus maintaining space that is no longer needed nor affordable?

Revenue: Do we have the capacity and capability to reallocate   and repurpose space strategically, now and in the future?

  • What areas of campus are considered with physical plant?

We consider all areas of your campus, not just your classroom spaces. We look at labs, student centers, dining areas, workout areas, and other third spaces to determine how people are using spaces in additional to the way your institution has prescribed spaces be used.

We don't only consider physical spaces; we also look at your institution's guiding and planning documents and artifacts, as well as perform qualitative and quantitative assessments of the spaces.

  • What deliverables does a college or university get from Credo's space optimization process to share with donors?

Deliverables are discussed during the kickoff meeting and tailored to your specific need. We typically include the following with each space optimization plan:

    1. Targeted Plan encompassing the process and resulting targeted space utilization plan narrative and visuals that are geared toward potential donors.
    2. Diagram floor plans of suggested interior space allocations and changes, an inventory of projected classrooms required by size, and recommendations for achieving those.
    3. Final Report which incorporates existing plans, campus data, the qualitative and  quantitative assessments of spaces, and community feedback.
